Summary:
Hastrup (a postdoctoral fellow in anthropology at the U. of Copenhagen, Denmark) presents an ethnographic study of the effects of the 2004 Asian tsunami on a fishing village in Tamil Nadu, India. She analyzes the villagers' approach to recovery as an issue of local agency theorizing about everyday life providing the means for managing invasive changes of the local environment and for returning to ordinary life. These efforts involve the struggle to (re)create a sense of subjective agency both in the face of the tsunami as well as the precarious social, environmental, and economic conditions characteristic of a rural community dependent on scarce natural resources.
