Summary:
Nearly 100 years before Prohibition took effect, the temperance movement in Florida produced futile, and often violent, efforts to outlaw the sale of liquor. Such a movement attacked the very core of existence for the majority of citizens who gathered at the tavern to discuss politics, catch up on news, socialize and entertain. Willis (history U. of Wisconsin-Stevens Point) details a century of conflict involving race, politics, religion, gender and class as concerned middle Floridians sought to bring order to what they deemed an unstable citizenry under the influence of alcohol--foreshadowing the same battle in the war on drugs.
