Summary:
Few biographies of Marx have interrogated his family life in detail. Gabriel, author of other 19th century-focused biographies, offers a human story about the love and women that supported Karl Marx when he became larger than life as one of the most influential figures of the 19th century. Gabriel starts early in Marx's life, in the 1830s and goes beyond Karl himself considering his three daughters, two of whom committed suicide. In between is a story in which the Marx family endures hardship, betrayal and revolution. Divided into seven parts, sub-sections focus on specific years in their lives. At the beginning of the book is an exhaustive cast of characters and a political time-line. Two sections of black-and-white plates present images of the Marx family and their closest associates.
