Summary:
Soustelle (emeritus, chemical engineering, Ecole des mines de Saint-Etienne, France) introduces chemical kinetics to graduate and undergraduate students in such fields as chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, and combustion. The textbook differs from others, he says, by taking into account the ubiquity of computers in laboratories, and by considering other modes in addition to the famous quasi-steady state approximation. Covering first basic concepts then reaction mechanisms and kinetic properties, he discusses such topics as reaction mechanisms and elementary steps, experimental laws and calculation of kinetic laws of homogeneous and heterogeneous systems, modes with rate-determining steps, the theory of the activated complex in the gas phase, and the kinetics of heterogeneous stoichiometric reactions.
