Summary:
Education scholars Fenwick, Richard Edwards (both U. of Stirling, Britain), and Peter Sawchuck (U. of Toronto, Canada) argue that the shift towards materiality in learning that is occurring in other social sciences is also apparent in education. In this perspective, they say, the material world is treated as continuous with, in fact embedded in, immaterial energies such as certain social relations and human intensities. Therefore, they use the term sociomaterial. Their topics include complexity theory in education, cultural historical activity theory, actor-network theory, and spatial theory in educational research.
