- Summary:
- Following an introduction to anti-elitism in America, Liu (humanities collective, film and media studies, U. of California- Irvine) considers how standardized testing has produced the "average student"; how Hofstadter's critique of inspirational literature for ordinary Americans relates to Adorno's "authoritarian personality"; and the institutionalization of 1960s counterculture values in cultural studies. Citing examples of political espousal of populist ideas by both New Leftists and neoconservatives, she concludes that expert knowledge is still needed to address the concerns of the people.
