- Summary:
- Fulford (U. of Reading) and Rippon (U. of Exeter) report findings from a 1993-1995 program of excavation focused on the eastern side of the castle's medieval Keep. The project produced important results concerning the dating and occupation of the late Roman shore fort, evidence of continuity of occupation between Roman and Saxo-Norman periods, evidence of trade contact between Pevensey and the Mediterranean from the 5th to 7th centuries, occupation within the Castle between the later 11th and later 12th centuries, date and architectural context of the original construction of the Keep, major repairs to the Keep, occupation from the 13th to 15th centuries, Armada period re-fortification of the Keep, and its post-medieval disintegration and robbing.
