Summary:
A well-known literary critic based at Harvard, Levin (1912-94) collected written versions of 16 talks (one in French) he had delivered over the years into a volume published in 1959 by The Riverside Press Cambridge, and in 1963 by Atheneum as Contexts of Criticism. They are arranged in sections on working definitions, notations on novelists, and long views. Among the topics are new frontiers in the humanities, the tradition of tradition, Don Quixote and Moby Dick, observations on the style of Ernest Hemingway, society as its own historian, and criticism in crisis.
