- Summary:
- This reference for high school and up gives insight on the social and cultural history of the Ottoman Empire. The book begins with a historical overview of the 600-year Islamic monarchy, then covers the impact of the sultan and the imperial palace on the daily life of the empire, with information on the ruling elite and three important social classes: merchants, craftsmen, and peasant farmers. Each subsequent chapter covers an aspect of daily life in rural and agricultural communities and in Muslim and non-Muslim religious communities of the empire. Islamic education and law, courtship and marriage, food and drink, games and sports, and Sufis and other mystical orders are covered. A chapter on illness and death includes material on healing methods. The reference offers a chronology and b&w historical illustrations, plus a few b&w photos of historical sites. Kia directs the Central and Southwest Asian Studies Center at the University of Montana. Annotation ©2011 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
