Summary:
Robinson (art history and classical studies, Vanderbilt U.) has written an epic work, describing not only the origins and classical form and context of the fountain of Peirene in the city of Corinth, but continuing the fountain's history through its post-classical use when the spring's water was diverted, the fountain buried, a Byzantine cemetery took its place, and noting the Ottoman use of the spring's water. The late 19th century re-discovery of the fountain and its subsequent phases of thorough (and ongoing) excavation and study are described in detail. The volume is oversized (9.75x11.75") and heavily illustrated with drawings of the sites, period photos, and color photos of the site today. Initial chapters describe the fountain's meanings and uses, with lengthy passages quoted from classical Greek sources followed by English translation. This impressive volume is accessible to the general reader and will be of interest to specialists. An exhaustive bibliography is included. Distributed in North America by The David Brown Book Co.
