- Summary:
- Burgeoning urban homeless youth gangs and street children is a disturbing trend in both developed and developing nations. From ethnographic research in her childhood home of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Heinonen (international gender studies, U. of Oxford) debunks the assumption held by the public and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) that such children should be treated as a homogenous delinquent subculture outside their parents' influence. In the contexts of sociality theory and questions about the meaning of "culture," she presents life stories of parents and children from diverse backgrounds permeated with the themes of poverty; yilunta, i.e., honor, shame, and family pride; and the roles of acculturation by families, NGOs, teachers, church groups, and police in their lives.
