- Summary:
- Egan (psychology, Dublin City U.) has researched the topic of clergy sexual abuse for almost 20 years. Here, he explores the crisis facing the Catholic Church and ordinary Catholics in light of the findings of the Murphy report of 2006, which revealed the shocking extent of clergy sexual abuse in Dublin, Ireland, and the negligent response of the Church to official complaints by adult victims. Writing in a conversational tone for general readers, Egan examines the crisis as a crisis of credibility and loss, rather than in terms of faith and belief. He categorizes various popular yet flawed rationales for the behavior, such as the celibacy rationale, and instead sees the abuse in systemic terms, blaming the Church's culture of denial, absence of accountability, and its narcissistic clerical culture. He also categorizes individual emotional, intellectual, and moral responses to the crisis among ordinary people. The book concludes with suggestions for reforming Church culture and restoring credibility. Each chapter ends with group reflection questions. There is no subject index. Egan heads the Department of Behavioral Sciences at All Hallows College, Dublin City University.
