"Beauties of Washington Irving. The selection bearing the foregoing title was not made by Mr. Irving. It originally appeared in England, and was the piratical act of some English bookseller. A copy was stereotyped by some American publisher, and was about to be put to press in this country, when he was informed that he would be liable to prosecution for infringing the copyrights of the works selected from. Mr. I. purchased the plates to destroy them. He was afterwards induced to permit us to issue an edition for our own benefit. The copyright was taken out and advertised by Mr. Irving's agent, without his knowledge. This explanation is due to Mr. I., that he may not stand chargeable with the indelicacy of selecting and pointing out any portions of his writings as 'beauties.' Carey, Lea & Blanchard."--Publisher's note, front matter of Irving's Legends of the conquest of Spain, Philadelphia, 1835.
