Summary:
In this admirable volume presenting the proceedings of a conference sponsored by the Institute of Jewish Studies at the editor's campus in 2008, Stern (rabbinic Judaism, U. College London) introduces 11 papers that shed light on the problematic meanings of sects and sectarianism in Jewish history from antiquity (e.g., the Essenes) to modern times (e.g., Jews for Jesus). At one pole, is the viewpoint that since the Temple in Jerusalem served as the unifying focus of such early groups, they should not be considered sects. Another author takes the position that it is worthwhile for sociologists of religion and historians to treat these diverse minority religious and social movements in these terms, despite the fact that there was no orthodoxy in Second Temple Judaism to rebel against.
