Biography/History:

Third chief astronomer of the observatory in Samarqand.

Summary:

Commentary on the Zīj Gūrgānī, also known as the Zīj-i jadīd-i Sulṭānī, which comprised tables of calendar calculations, trigonometry, planets, and stars compiled from observations made at the observatory in Samarqand, completed in 1447. The tables themselves are not included.

Layout: Written in 15 long lines; frame ruled.

Script: Written in a naskh script in black ink; pointed.

Decoration: Numerous diagrams in red ink; rubrications in red.

Binding: Contemporary red leather with flap (Type II), blind-stamped central mandorla on covers and flap; marbled paper doublure.

Origin: Copy completed in A.H. 899 (1493-1494, colophon, f. 409r).

Paper: Visible laid lines with chain lines in groups of 3.
