Summary:
Taking a cue from Slavoj Zizek on the importance of how we interpret social change for giving that change meaningful direction, Woods' (education policy, democracy and leadership, U. of Hertfordshire) book points to the discernible signs of progressive change in education in order to most effectively promote them. An avowedly third-way vision, social entrepreneurialism plays a key role in such promotion as well as democratic power-sharing, but not without a serious critique of the private-business/market-based model. He concludes with strategic suggestions toward integrating democratic values into education policy. His focus is on education in England, but he feels its points should resonate in other quarters of the developed world. Distributed in the US by ISBS.
