Summary:
This text for an introductory undergraduate course emphasizes the relationship between health and development. Written to be of interest to non-majors as well as majors in health sciences, the text comes with a web site offering links to videos, journal articles, policy briefs, and lists of work and study opportunities abroad, plus study tools and an interactive glossary. After a section on basic principles, the text addresses themes such as ethical and human rights concerns, health system organization, and the roles of public, private, and NGO sectors. A section on the burden of disease provides separate chapters on environmental health, nutrition, women's health, children's health, communicable and non-communicable diseases, and injuries. The book's final section demonstrates how different actors work together to improve global health in the face of natural disasters and complex humanitarian emergencies. This second edition contains a new chapter on career paths, with 18 profiles of real-life global health workers around the world. There is expanded material on health disparities, tropical diseases, financing global health, and drug resistance. Learning features include objectives, vignettes, case studies, and study questions. Skolnik lectures in global health at George Washington University. Annotation ©2011 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
