- Kislak Center Folio RBC 2027 40 purchased for the Penn Libraries in 2025 from Bernard Quaritch. Manuscript bibliographical note in pencil on back pastedown. "[A]nnotated throughout in a mid-eighteenth-century hand in red and brown ink on over c. 115 pages and on 50 loose additions laid in [in pocket on front pastedown and before leaves S2, T2, T3, U3, Y2, Y4, 2B2, 2H2, 2L1, 2P3, 2P4, 2S3, 2T2, 2T3, 2U4, 2X3, 2Z1, 2Z2, 3A3, 3B3, 3C1, 3E1, 3E2, 3E3, and 3F4] (varying from small slips of several lines to chapters of several folio gatherings), comparing the printed text here with the text of the 7th edition (1715-6)."--Bookseller's description. The paper slip laid in before leaf 3A3 is the unfolded, previously sealed enclosure for a letter[?] addressed "To Mr Hyde at the London Assurance in Thread Needle Street London" [that is, John Hyde, governor of the London Assurance 1741-1771] and postmarked "11/AV" [that is, 11 August] and "TUN BRIDG" [that is, Tonbridge, Kent, England], with manuscript note ("Boulter[?] 1746 JM[...]Co[...] -145.10 Coach at 2. Wm. Scrogs"). Seal: clear lozenge-shaped red applied seal of closure (presumably shellac), now broken into 2 fragments. Size: 14+ x 11+ mm. Design: upon a wreath, this crest: a royal crown set with three crosses pattées and enseigned with a winged heart, surmounted by a chevron inverted on a bar, the whole flanked by a sword point downwards and a globus cruciger.
