- Summary:
- Barda (Hebrew, Biblical, and Jewish studies; U. of Sydney) begins by reviewing the history of Egyptian Jews from colonial times to wars with Israel. The core of her study, however, is the experience of a small group of Egyptian Jews who emigrated to Australia, government policies related to their immigration, and their integration into Australian society. A final section compares their experience with another group of Egyptian Jews who migrated to France. Her topics are the socioeconomic and cultural configuration of the Australian sample group; Jewish ethnicity, religiosity, and politics; the three trigger events of forced emigration; a journey to the edge of the Diaspora; and a multilayered identity.
