Summary:

Destructive relationships with parents lead to unhealthy relationships throughout the lifespan unless they are effectively addressed. Written to be accessible to general readers and clients as well as counselors and therapists, this book emphasizes a brain-based understanding of poisonous parenting and its antidote, compassionate parenting. Contributors are counselors, family therapists, and clinical psychologists. They begin by describing different poisonous parenting styles, then review several major therapeutic models and show how good parenting is understood within these paradigms. One chapter is devoted to an interpersonal neurobiology approach to healthy relationships between adults and their parents, explaining how the brain, mind, and attachment are interrelated. Later chapters focus on how to repair the damage from attachment injuries. Contributors offer relational-cultural perspectives and religious perspectives on poisonous parenting, and describe parenting styles in the African American community.
