Summary:
Thomson (social research, Open U., UK) et al. examine what it means to be a mother today in the UK. They followed 62 British women in 2005 as they approached birth (and some into the first year of motherhood), and their study takes into account British cultural studies perspectives and a framework influenced by the work of Simone de Beauvoir, framing motherhood as a bodily and biographical situation. They analyze the divisions that exist between and within generations and consider aspects in the transition to first-time motherhood: conception and how women share the news with others; the body, pregnancy, and breastfeeding, including media representations; how family relationships change; expert advice aimed at pregnant women and new mothers in magazines, advice books, websites, and through networks; workplace issues; the commercialization of motherhood through specialized products; and birth stories and the maternal experience.
