Summary:
These ten essays explore how cultural or symbolic wealth affects economic advantage, opportunity and success in ways usually left unanalyzed by traditional economic theories. In their introduction, the editors Bandelj (sociology, UC Irvine) and Wherry (sociology, U. of Michigan) describe four perspectives that inform these essays--political economy, the global value chain, impression management, and cultural sociology. The book is also organized into four sections: the empirical and theoretical motivations for studying wealth from a cultural perspective, the construction of cultural wealth through practices of heritage preservation, converting cultural wealth into monetary wealth, and cultural wealth in global value chains. The contributors are academics from the United States and Europe with backgrounds in sociology, history and economics. Annotation ©2011 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
