The Cardi is the Welsh equivalent of the Yorkshire man and Aberdonian: a hard-headed, thrifty, business-minded individual whose mores set him apart from his countrymen. We learn what inspired this reputation - and the reasons why the Cardi came to occupy such a prominent place in the popular imagination - in Mike Benbough-Jackson's representational history
Between the late eighteenth and the early twenty-first centuries, the image of the county and people underwent significant changes. Political, moral and economic interests, from within and outside the county, Wales and beyond, recast Cardiganshire and the Cardi. By identifying these various and sometimes conflicting images, this study demonstrates how a county with a relatively small population was able to assume a cultural presence in Wales and beyond which was out of all proportion to its size.
How people saw Cardiganshire and the Cardi depended on their interests and sympathies. Attention is paid to the ways in which the county and its inhabitants were named and positioned in relation to values and ideas about the past and future. A number of sources, including poems, newspapers, travel guides and manuscripts, are drawn upon, and the thoughts of all commentators, whether they were politicians, tinkers, joke-writers or academics, are accorded equal importance because each help explain how this county was able to assume such a cultural presence.
