Summary:

In 1618 the English adventurer Raleigh was executed for trying to start a war with Spain by destroying a Spanish settlement in Venezuela against orders, denying his claim that the town hindered access to a gold mine he had found. A specialist in early modern English and Dutch literature, Sellin (emeritus, U. of California-Los Angeles and Vrije U., Amsterdam) investigates the case and finds the town and the mine exactly where he said they were.
