Summary:
This volume examines the life and work of Martin Lister, a pioneering seventeenth century English naturalist and the father of arachnology, the study of spiders. The biography follows Lister through several periods of his life examining the interrelation of court culture and aristocratic society and the burgeoning study of natural history in England. The work outlines Lister's major contributions to arachnology and other fields and notes his close connections to many of the major scientific breakthroughs of the era. A collection of several black and white images including reproductions of Lister's original sketches are included. Roos is a professor of history at the University of Colorado.
