- Summary:
- This is the seventh volume in a series initiated in 1978. Miller (veterinary medicine, U. of Missouri) and Fowler (emeritus, zoological medicine, U. of California, Davis) have brought together 83 contributed chapters from an impressively international roster of over 100 contributors from 12 countries. The editors emphasize in the preface that the two medical disciplines devoted to maintaining animals in zoos and protecting and maintaining animals in the wild are converging in many respects. This collection includes cutting edge articles on particular issues of specific animals (such as white nose disease in bats, Ebola virus in wild great apes). It also includes general topics such as guidelines for the management of zoonotic diseases, integrated pest management, zoo animal surgery, disaster preparedness, mixed species exhibits, and emerging diseases at the interface of people, domestic animals, and wildlife, among others. Arrangement is in sections devoted to animals that are aquatic, reptiles & amphibians, birds, mammals, xenarthra, marsupials, primates, chiroptera, carnivores, marine mammals, elephants, perrissodactyla, artiodactylids, and camelids.
