- Summary:
- In what is introduced as a "textbook with attitude," Cohen (aging and mental health disparities, U. of South Florida) and Eisdorfer (psychiatry, aging, U. of Miami) address a broad audience on the challenges of integrating evidence-based psychosocial and preventive information and clinical practice in the context of the rising prevalence of mental health problems in this growing population. Following a conceptual framework for understanding mental health and illness in later life, they present clinical guidelines for treating specific disorders. The final section treats clinical, ethical, legal, health policy, and societal issues, including the needs of the elderly in disasters and elder abuse or neglect.
