Summary:
When German workers rose up to bring an end to the carnage of World Wax I, they began a struggle that would prove decisive in determining the course of the twentieth century. Inspired by events unfolding in revolutionary Russia, the German working class not only deposed their autocratic leader, but began a contest for the democratic control of their society from below.
In 1923, amidst skyrocketing inflation, an expanding proto-fascist movement, and a French occupation of Germany's important Ruhr valley, the fledgling Communist International dispatched Victor Serge to Berlin to document the struggle. These moving reports from the battlefront provide illuminating insights into the mood of the masses on the eve of a revolution that could have been. Book jacket.
