Summary:
This collection of 19 essays is about Christianity in Egypt during the late antiquity. The first of three sections is devoted to Coptic and Greek papyrology. These essays look at records kept at the private Apa Apollos monastery, dating Coptic writings, notes on the inter-relation between Coptic and Greek, and more Coptic documents from other sites. The second focuses on sixth century Alexandrian-theologian, John Philoponus, with a new look at his career, his angelology, his writing on the composite nature of Christ, his connection to Armenian religion and the context of Byzantium. The final section is an assortment of cultural studies of late antiquity, such as Anaximander's sayings in the 6th century CE, the Eucharist in late antique Egypt, Coptic wisdom poetry, an apostasy and reconciliation in the Coptic Orthodox Church. The essays come from sources with their own pagination and that has been retained here, while each essay has a Roman number recurring in the top-right corner denoting what essay it is in this book. This is to facilitate their use in connection to original sources. Annotation ©2012 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
