- Summary:
- The emergence of the Republic of Turkey from the ashes of the Ottoman Empire involved an internal power struggle, the outcome of which was the perhaps surprising result of a militantly secular state that confined religion to the private sphere emerging out of a society that had been the seat of the Islamic caliphate for over four centuries. In this work, Ozoglu (history, U. of Central Florida) examines these internal power struggles in order to understand how such an outcome was possible, with his primary purpose being to explain the processes by which opposition in the new republic was silenced and how those processes in turn influenced the nature of the Kemalist state, which he argues was not a predetermined vision but a pragmatic synthesis of political realities and opportunities to silence the opposition.
