Summary:
In the 1986 first edition, Ukrainian mathematician Marchenko focused on methods for solving the inverse problem of spectral analysis and on the necessary and sufficient conditions that the spectral data must satisfy in order to make it possible to reconstruct the potential of the corresponding Sturm-Liouville operator. The conditions imply that the spectral data must be known for all values of spectral parameter that belong to the spectrum of the operator. This turns out to be impossible even in theory, so he has added a chapter devoted to what information can be obtained with only a finite interval of values of the spectral parameter.
