Summary:
Drawn from papers delivered at a symposium held at the London School of Economics in March 2010, this collection of twelve essays on international social welfare policy examines the effects of British imperialism and policies enacted during imperial rule on the subsequent development of national policies in the former colonies and subject regions. Beginning with two articles outlining the history of British imperialism and general principles of colonialism and social welfare, the work proceeds geographically with contributions covering the Caribbean states, South Africa, India, Hong Kong, Zimbabwe, Tanzania and Australia. Contributors include academics in fields relating to social work, sociology and public policy from universities in several of the represented countries, the UK, the United States and Canada.
