- Summary:
- Milford Beeghly, an Iowa farmer, had a passion for developing hybrid corn. He was also filmmaker Monteith McCollum's grandfather. The film incorporates time-lapse photography, interviews and found film to explicate Beeghly's obsessive attempts to develop a perfect strain of corn. With the intensity of the true eccentric, Beeghly hawked his daring new seed on television, ignored his family, and continued to experiment with different varieties on his own until he was 99. Echoing his grandfather's single-mindedness, McCollum spent six years on the film. In trying to understand what drove his ancestor, McCollum has delivered a tremendous filmed essay that examines what work means to the soul: a particularly American topic.
