"This book was first published in France in 1970 and was originally intended for French students of Faulkner. In translating it for an American audience, I have not altogether resisted the temptation of revising it. There are numerous changes in phrasing and small additions have been made in several chapters to clarify or qualify certain statements. The general pattern of the book has been slightly altered and the bibliography has been brought up to date."--Preface.
