Summary:
Barker (history, U. of Hull) has distilled some 20 years of research, much of it conducted during her long career in university adult education, into the small but important seaport on the North Sea coast of England. She charts the growth of the port and its fleet over the first 90 years of the 17th century, discussing the impact of the Civil War, and Whitby's confidence while dominating the coal trade. She continues the story of the established port through the long 18th century with two long chapters subdivided into sections on details of the fleet, the town that supported it and it supported, the workforce, rewards and risk in seafaring, and other matters.
