Summary:
The 11 essays of this collection were first presented at a panel organized by Fleming (English, Simon Fraser U., Canada) held during the 2008 Renaissance Society of America conference in Chicago. Scholars in a range of fields in Canada, the U.S., and Europe engage with the concept of "discovery," as this was developed during the early modern period, examining such topics as the philosophy of Francis Bacon, concepts of the cosmos of Italian astronomer Giovanni Battista Benedetti, and the notion of discovery in an early work by Descartes. Other concepts of discovery are expanded through analysis of literature and of the developing commercial strategies among printers, publishers, and booksellers in France. Fleming contributes a useful overview of the state of research in the field in his introduction and afterword. A comprehensive bibliography is provided.
