Summary:
Arguing that educators should take school food seriously, this work describes innovative school food programs around the world, from Vermont to Tanzania. The contributors are school food reformers representing a range of national contexts, professions, and political stances. The international world of school food politics that they describe is inhabited by anti-hunger and anti-obesity advocates, animal liberationists, organic farmers, food manufacturing corporations, and government and nongovernmental organizations. The book goes beyond politics and examines factors such as family dynamics, technological advances, and religious and cultural aspects of school food issues. It also explores local contexts and the roles of parents, activists, teachers, and youth in reform. An appendix gathers curricula, policies, and recipes. Robert teaches education at the University of Buffalo. Weaver-Hightower teaches education at the University of North Carolina. Annotation ©2011 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
