- Summary:
- Contains quotations, sonnets, and couplets by French authors, such as Jean-Pierre Claris de Florian (Complaint de la Reine Marie), Voltaire's Alzire, and others. There is Portuguese verse by the Conde de Sabugal, sonnets by the vicondessa de Balsemão D. Catharina, Marques de Frontera, and others, followed by a selection of dated French quotations from contemporary French novels, such as Arlincort's Le Solitaire (1821), from the Mémoires de Madame de Genlis ("Pour le Départ"), and finishing with an eight-page description in Portuguese of a tour from Paris to Switzerland in 1825 to Berne and Neuchatel. The compilation, written on paper watermarked at times with the phrases "J. Whatman" or "Turkey MIlls / 1818" and sometimes with a fleur de lys, appears to have been composed, with unsequential dating, by a young woman as a memento of a grand European tour in France, possibly Portugal, and Switzerland.
