Probably part of the Inquisitorial archives given to Vicente Riva Palacio in payment of a debt by the State of Mexico, in the second half of the 19th century; probably given by Riva Palacio to an unknown friend in the 1880s before he sold most of the collection back to the State before his death in 1896 (Javier Castaño).
Offered for sale at auction at Swann Galleries, 18 November 2008, part of lot 286.
Sold by Alfred Eidlisz (Brooklyn, New York), 2011.
Presented to the Penn Libraries in 2012 by Arnold and Deanne Kaplan (Collectify accession no. 2011.08.05.00002).

Summary:
File of documents related to the arrest and trial of Goncalo Perez Ferro by the Mexican Inquisition for a relapse into Judaism, later bound into a single volume. The documents include the order for his arrest, testimony against him, his confession, his testimony before various judges against 24 other Jews, and a record of the light punishment that he received after showing repentance. His signature appears many times on the documents (f. 74v-155v), some of which are in his hand.

Foliation: Paper, ii + 157 + ii ; 1-140, [141-157], contemporary foliation in ink, modern foliation in pencil, upper right recto.
Script: Written in multiple cursive hands, including that of Goncalo Perez Ferro.
Binding: Late 19th- or early 20th-century half leather over decorated paper with spine title in Spanish, Inquisicion MS 1597 (Javier Castaño).
Origin: Written in Mexico City, 1597 (f. 1r).
Damage due to ink oxidation on title page (f. 1); puncture tear with minimal loss of text (f. 153).
