Description based on: The second weeke. (Svnday. Jan. 8. [1643]); title from caption.
First no. issued with a title page (with double row of type ornaments) bearing the title: 'Mercvrivs aulicus,a diurnall, communicating the intelligence and affaires of the Court to the rest of the kingdome', and the imprint: Oxford [i.e. London] : printed by H. Hall, for W. Webb, Ann. Dom. M.DC.XLII [i.e. 1643]; cf. Nelson & Seccombe 275.000B.
Initially edited by Peter Heylyn; from Sept. 1643 edited by John Birkenhead, who also assisted with earlier issues. Cf. Frank; English Revolution.
Latest issue consulted: [Ser. 2] The 47 vveeke, (ending November 23. 1644).
Reproduction of the originals from the Burney Collection, the British Library (London).
The first and most important of the Royalist newsbooks, one of the few published in Oxford; later newsbooks of the period copied this title.
The known extent of this London edition is based on that given in Nelson & Seccombe; it is not clear whether this reprinted series lasted as long as the original publication; the Oxford edition ceased with the issue of 7 Sept. 1645. Cf. Madan and Neslon & Seccombe.
The title of another printing of the first issue (Nelson & Seccombe 275.101), presumed to be of this London reprint edition, reads: Oxford djvrnall: communicating the intelligence, and affaires of the Court, to the rest of the Kingdome. Cf. Frank; English Revolution and Nelson & Seccombe, 470.1.
Title spelling varies slightly.
Variant printings of several issues are known; whether Oxford or London reprints is disputed by authorities in some cases. Cf. Nelson & Seccombe; Madan; English Revolution.
Years of publication and coverage given according to Lady Day dating.

"Fourtieth week" (1-7 Oct. 1643) is a counterfeit London issue. Cf. Madan and Nelson & Seccombe 275.140B.
In three annual series: series 1 numbered by weeks (spelt); series 2 numbered by weeks (part spelt (to no. 20), part numbered (no. 21 to 47, the last known issue of 1644)); cf. Nelson & Seccombe.
