Summary:
Maria Colwell was a seven year old child, well known to social workers, who died in 1973 after continued neglect and abuse. Butler (social work, U. of Bath, UK) and Drakefored (social policy and applied social sciences, U of Wales, Cardiff) examine this case, the subsequent inquiry, and attitudes towards the role of social work. The Colwell case, which became very famous in the UK, spurred changes in the developing field of social work. However, several children have died in the UK from abuse in the years since the Colwell murder, and social workers are still blamed for failing to take decisive action.
