- Summary:
- In this volume Rampone (English, South Carolina State U.) surveys Elizabethan sexual mores and practices as a means of understanding and contextualizing its use in Shakespeare's plays and poetry. He begins by outlining the Greek, Roman, early Catholic, and Protestant attitudes and legal traditions regarding sex, marriage and prostitution. Rampone then examines the use of erotic imagery and references in Shakespeare's works; considers the treatment of sexuality in 20th century stage and screen productions of these works; and provides critical readings exploring the use of sexuality in a number of plays from the perspectives of feminism, psychoanalysis, race, gender, and post-colonialism. Finally, he includes excerpts from several 16th and 17th century marriage manuals. Annotation ©2011 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
