Summary:
There are two meanings to her title, says Papargyriou (modern Greek literature, King's College London). The first indicates how reading a novel is an activity undertaken for its own sake--like playing a game. The second takes playfulness as an element of modernism that a host of writers used to challenge the literary establishment of their time. In particular, she looks at the work of five upstart authors and charts a formative period in 20th-century Greek fiction between 1935 and 1975. They are Yannis Skarimbas, Nikos-Gavriil Pentzikis, Aris Alexandrou, Stratis Tsirkas, and Nikos Kachtitsis. The study is largely based on her 2005 doctoral dissertation for Oxford University.
