Summary:
This work explores the history of the Hamidiye, Kurdish tribal militias created by the Ottoman state in the late 19th century in an effort to bind the Kurds on the periphery of the empire to the state and to deploy them as a means of suppressing Armenian nationalist-revolutionary activity. Klein (history, U. of Akron) details how the changes wrought by the institutionalization of the Hamidiye frequently went beyond, and even undermined, these Ottoman state goals, describing the way that the militias helped transform the local power structures and social and political organization of Kurdish society, changed structures of land tenure, exacerbated Armenian grievances against the Ottoman state, and strengthened the authority of Kurdish leaders against the authority of the state.
