- Summary:
- The Centraal Museum of Utrecht is the oldest Dutch city-museum. A big part of the collection of paintings dates from before 1600 and is in the museum's pocession since 1838, it's year of foundation. Some of these paintings were donated, others were taken, from churches and cloisters in Utrecht and its surroundings during the iconoclasm of 1566. The museum expanded it's collection through grants, loans and purchases. At the moment the museum has the biggest, and most important, collection of paintings from Utrecht in the world. The work of Jan van Scorel forms the most important cornerstone of the collection. In this richly illustrated catalogue all paintings are treated in its original historical context. Next to more general articles about history of collection and the results of technical research on the paintings.
