- Summary:
- In June 1941, when Germany invaded the Soviet Union, Hitler launched his war of extermination for "lebensraum" (living space) in the East. The local population was to be expelled, scattered, racially debilitated, obliterated. Himmler sent over 30,000 men to follow in the wake of the Wehrmacht and "pacify" the occupied territories. Hundreds of thousands of German soldiers witnessed this first phase of the Holocaust, the systematic murder of Soviet Jews, and through them word seeped back home.
