Summary:
Dorothy Hewett was an Australian playwright, poet and political activist of the mid 20th century. Morrison (English, U. of Sydney) presents her as a post-war, Romantic, first wave feminist, Leftist and post-colonial writer of great facility, whose essays, correspondence and criticism create a unique perspective on the mid-century Australian social, political and literary world. This collection of Hewett's non-fiction prose includes a selection of surprisingly intimate literary criticism of primarily Australian authors; political essays and reviews focusing on workers' and women's rights as well as Communism; and a spectrum of articles on Australian theater ranging from the creation of Australian heroines, to comparative criticism, to the nature and character of the Australian musical production.
