Summary:
Teten (political science, U. of Louisiana) conducts an analysis of presidential rhetoric form George Washington to George W. Bush, drawing on a line-by-line reading and rhetorical examination of all 226 State of the Union addresses, all 58 Presidential Inaugural addresses, 3,857 Executive Orders, and 5,022 Presidential Proclamations. He is principally concerned with how the use and function of rhetoric has evolved in presidential addresses over time, with particular attention to the relevance of findings to the paradigmatic "traditional/modern" divide in studies of the presidency.
