- Summary:
- Beresford (social policy, Brunel U.) et al. argue for a person-centered approach to social care in the UK, detailing what such a system would look like, barriers to it, and how they can be overcome. They draw on a project they conducted from 2005 to 2007 (the UK's Standards We Expect) to describe the experiences and ideas of service users, their families, and those who work with them. Chapters discuss the policy and broader context for support and social care; the origins, meaning, and components of person-centered support; barriers in funding, the workforce, informal care, independent living, bureaucratization, preoccupation with negative risk, and practice; ways forward for policy and practice in terms of access to services and participation; and how change may be achieved through different approaches.
