Summary:
Studies indicate that social support is a buffer against depression, and that longstanding relationships are beneficial for breast cancer patients, but that spouses and other stressed caregivers of persons with dementia are vulnerable to health problems. Noting that "social isolation is endemic to modern urban living," Roy (social work and clinical health psychology, U. of Manitoba) surveys the research on social support and health, then discusses options to provide support networks and interventions for children and adults with health problems and their caregivers.
